What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people around the world. It is caused by a disruption in how the body processes sugar, leading to elevated levels of glucose in the blood.

Types of Diabetes and ways to manage

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune disorder in which the body fails to produce insulin, while type 2 is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not use insulin properly.

No matter which type of diabetes you have, it is important to take steps to manage it and stay healthy. Eating healthy foods, controlling portion sizes, and engaging in regular physical activity are all important parts of managing diabetes.

Additionally, for those with type 1 diabetes, it is important to monitor your blood sugar levels and take insulin as prescribed. Living with diabetes can be difficult, but support from family and friends is invaluable.

Causes of illness
  1. Genetics: Certain gene mutations can increase a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  2. Obesity: Excess body fat, especially around the waist, increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  3. Unhealthy diet: Eating too much sugar, saturated fat, and trans fat can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  4. Physical inactivity: Not getting enough exercise can also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  5. Age: The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with age.
  6. High blood pressure: High blood pressure can damage the arteries and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  7. Race and ethnicity: Certain racial and ethnic groups are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
  8. Prediabetes: Having prediabetes puts a person at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Although diabetes is a serious condition, it is manageable. With proper care and lifestyle modifications, those living with diabetes can lead a full and healthy life.
